We are so suppressed by the routine of this every life style that most of us seem helpless. However, if we look closely to ancient techniques we shall discover the magnificent way to understand and realize the ones around us and mostly ourselves. If only we could stop for a moment and allow this to happen. May all beings be happy (Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu)

Let me bow to Indian Maharishi Patanjali with folded hands who helped in removing the impurities of the mind through his writings on Yoga, impurities of speech through his writings on grammar, and impurities of body through his writings on Ayurveda.

The American justice Dept. have recently approved the power of yoga and meditation vide a recent judgement in the American court." Man Who Slapped Wife Sentenced to Yoga, It's Anger Management, Says Judge." First there was house arrest. Now there's yoga. A judge ordered a man convicted of slapping his wife to take a yoga class as part of his one-year probation. "It's part of anger management," County Criminal Court at Law Judge Larry Standley said of the ancient Hindu philosophy of exercise and well-being. "For people who are into it, it really calms them down. " Standley, a former prosecutor, said the case of James Lee Cross was unique. Cross, a 53-year-old car salesman from Tomball, explained that his wife was struggling with a substance abuse problem and that he struck her on New Year's Eve during an argument about her drinking. "He was trying to get a hold of her because she has a problem," Standley said after the court hearing. "I thought this would help him realize that he only has control over himself." The sentence came as a surprise to Cross, who was told to enroll in a class and report back to Standley on his progress. "I'm not very familiar with it," Cross said of yoga. "From what I understand, it may help in a couple ways, not only as far as mentally settling, but maybe a little weight loss." Darla Magee, an instructor at Yoga Body Houston in River Oaks, said she would recommend that Cross take a basic yoga class emphasizing breathing and including a variety of postures -- forward bends, back bends and twists. "Yoga can help us to get rid of many emotional issues we might have," she said. "It's a spiritual cleanse." Prosecutor Lincoln Goodwin agreed to a sentence of probation without jail time because Cross had no significant criminal history http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2365341.bhattathirihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09142082349506392967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182098.post-1104723760948057002005-01-02T21:42:00.000-06:002005-01-02T21:42:00.000-06:00Thanks; that's particularly helpful.

Evolutionary biology can, at times, tell us something about the "how" because we can look at simpler (or previous) versions of a structure, and observe how particular pieces perform particular functions, and then look at the commonalities and differences in the more complex (or later) structures. We can't do this in evolutionary psychology. We can look at broad differences between ourselves and our primate anscestors, and psychologists have been doing that for decades (if not centuries), and sometimes we can even look at brain structures in primates (or rats, or whatever), and compare them to human brains, but once again, this is what psychologists have been doing for a long time, and there's no need for an evolutionary story. In biology, the evolutionary story sometimes serves the puprose of determining the relationships between the various versions of particular structures, and thus they can be useful. Still, in both fields, looking at the present version of the structure tells you the most about the "how."

Posted by ChrisAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182098.post-1104701212116607812005-01-02T15:26:00.000-06:002005-01-02T15:26:00.000-06:00This is a good post, Chris. It's always seemed to me that there was something a bit backward about using evolutionary stories as explanations of the 'how'; that is, it seems to me that the best evolutionary explanations tend to be cases in which we have a very good, detailed knowledge of the phenomenon already in hand (say, the physiology of a given organ) and are therefore able to construct an explanation of how that phenomenon came to be on the basis of clear knowledge of the phenomenon itself. So it would seem more reasonable to start with building our knowledge of cognition as we actually have it, and only then, bit by bit, letting whatever evolutionary account grow out of that as it may. But I've never had a very precise way of characterizing it, and this post helps clear up and make precise a great deal of vagueness in my previous reasoning.

Posted by Brandon WatsonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8182098.post-1104396147043268342004-12-30T02:42:00.000-06:002004-12-30T02:42:00.000-06:00Very nice! I never thought of critiques of evolutionary psychology from the cognitive end, as I am only aware of the criticisms from the evolution end, of which there are many, including basic misunderstanding of how evolution works. But I will re-read this tomorrow with a fresh mind and think about it. There is something really good here.

BTW, I attended a Philosophy of Biology Conference at Duke last year, the topic of which was evolutionary psychology - I wonder if they ever published proceedings...

Posted by coturnixAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
