Mixing Memory on the Road

I hate to trump a cog sci post with a personal one, but I'm going to be doing some traveling over the next couple months, and in the towns I will be visiting, I'm going to be looking for good eats (that's southern for "good food"), and a nice place to get a drink in the evening. I'm going to be in Austin, Chicago, and (potentially) Vancouver. Also Nashville, but I know that city pretty well. So, if you live in one of these cities, or know them well, please drop me an email or leave a comment with suggestions about places to eat and/or drink (and by drink, I don't mean water).

Chicago is a big town, it depends on where you'll be and how long you'll be around. I'm also traveling, but if I'm in town when you're visiting I'd be happy to buy you a drink. And in any event I have restaurant recommendations for every conceivable cuisine.

Hey Sean, I'll let you know when I'm going to be in Chicago when the plans are finalized. I'm going to be staying just north of Chicago, but I'll probably spend a lot of time in Evanston and downtown.

There used to be a really good Spanish restaurant in Evanston, but I don't remember the name, and it may not be there anymore. I last ate there about 7 years ago.

I think that the only Spanish restaurant in Evanston is Tapas Barcelona on Chicago. I don't know if that's where you ate, but that place is pretty good. I recommend the figs wrapped in bacon.

You should also go for some indian buffet on devon. My favorite place so far is on the north side of devon, a little west of where devon meets western. I can't remember the name; I identify it by the sign in the window that says, "All Yoy [sic] can eat."

Heather, that's it! I definitely remember the figs wrapped in bacon. Thanks.

As I'm fond of saying: In Austin we have both kinds of food, Tex-Mex AND Barbecue. Just kidding.

Som Popular/Good ones:

Tex-Mex: Trudys (enchilidas and a margarita), Curras (ceviche).
BBQ: County Line (Beef Ribs). Salt Lick (its quite a drive, it's BYOB, and they only take cash).
Steak : Austin Land and Cattle (NOT Texas land and cattle)
Foofy : Milaga's.
24 hours/breakfast : Kerby Lane. Magnolia Cafe.

Drinks : Are you going to be down town? Throw a rock. If that place doesn't suit you, ask fellow drinkers. Gingerman wouldn't be a bad starting place. Opal Divine's aint bad either.

Anon, thanks!

Austin = Salt Lick BBQ.. do it.. all you can eat.. get sick.. pass out in the back of a pick-up..

That's the second Salt Lick recommendation. I don't think I'll have a pickup to pass out in, but I'll definitely eat my fill. Thanks for the tip.

The best stuffed pizza in Chicago is Giordano's, but the best Chicago pizza experience is the Medici on 57th, near the University of Chicago.

If you want a *real* Chicago experience, visit Harold's Fried Chicken. I think there's one in Evanston, but it's better if you go into a really bad neighborhood to get it -- slathered with hot sauce and barbecue sauce, on a bed of wonder bread. Take out only.
